Doing my Msc in Theoretical Physics

Boring. Damn boring. How can a subject such as Quantum Mechanics be so boring? And it's nothing compare to the level of boredom in the other subjects such as Manifolds or the "Equilibrium blablabla.." The only thing we do is only watching the "teacher" put equation on the black board before solving them. Or writing one more "Definition", "Theorem"..

Why can't they give an intuitive picture of the physics involved? Yes, after the course I will know how to prove that such or such structure is smooth. Yes I will know the perturbative methods. Proving that such group is a normal subgroup is not going to have any secret to me. And so what???

Ok, I know. I will then be able to carry on "technical" calculations and please my supervisors.

But then, I won't know why quantum mechanics theories using non-local variable are dooms to fail. I won't know if randomness at the quantum level is intrasect or not. I won't know what to make of interpretations of QM such as Bohm theory. I won't be able to have a proper critical point of view of theories such as the Inflation theory. But then, I will be able to tell if such or such structure is diffeomorphic...arf!!

Les couples au Japon preferent desormais reduire leur depenses relatif au marriage. Ainsi, beaucoup preferent s'habiller pour le grand jour, juste le temps d'imortaliser l'evenement dans un studio photographique.

Cette tendance intervient alors que de nombreux couples, y compris des celebritees, appliquent le slogan de ryannaire en choisissant de celebrer leur union en toute sobriete: ce nouveau style s'appelle: ‘‘jimi kon’’ (no-frills wedding).

La recession amene de nombreux couple a couper dans leur depenses (d'autant qu'il est souvent difficile d'emprunter) et dans les tracas lies aux choix des invites.

Mon commentaire:
Tant mieux. Plutot que de s'endetter et finir par divorcer a cause de question d'argent, mieux vaut rester modeste.

Ce qui me fait delirer dans les debats sur la peine de morts:

- ceux qui parlent de "rationnel" sont ceux qui font le moins appelle a la raison et le plus au sentimentalisme: entre une solution qui baisse de maniere definitive le taux de recidive ils vont preferer une solution qui garantie qu'il y aura une recidive.
- ceux qui parlent du point de vue de la justice, sont ceux qui manifestement ne savent pas ce que c'est: pour eux, il est preferable que des innocents se fassent massacrer, violler, torturer, qu'une personne jugee coupable des pires des crimes (notament apres une enquette, un proces et un proces en appel) soit executer.

Remarquez, une chose est de manquer de logique, une autre est de manquer de constance.
Parce que ces memes personnes qui se la joue vierge effarouchee lorsqu'il est question que l'Etat execute quelqu'un jugee coupable apres des mois, voir des annees d'investigations, ne sourcilent pas quand il est question pour notre armee de tuer des peres de familles et cela sans jugement bien sur (je ne pense pas qu'une fraction de seconde suffise a decider si une personne a le droit de vivre ou de mourrir).

En general, les gens sont logiques et constants dans leur systeme de croyance. Pourquoi? Parce qu'ils y ont reflechis et parce que leur valeurs se sont faconnees au contacte de personnes partageant leur quotidien. La ou ca bloque, c'est quand ces memes personnes adoptent des valeurs, des croyances via la tele, les profs, les lobbys en tout genre, etc.., c'est a dire des personnes avec qui elles n'ont rien en commun. Et cela se reconnait au faite que ces valeures sont parcellaires. On ne peut s'attendre a ce qu'une personne manifeste une constance et de la logique dans les arguments qu'elle utilise pour defendre une position, une idee qu'elle a "gobe" sans esprit critique.

J'ai recement achette le livre de Penelope Farmer, Charlotte Farmer. Cela fait des annees que je voulais le faire, sachant que ma chanson preferee de The Cure etait base sur ce livre. Voila qui est fait et j'ai adorer ce livre. Difficile de ne pas essuyer une larme, surtout avec en fond musical "Charlotte Sometimes".
Voila mon passage prefere, qui est repris dans la chanson:

Quantum Physics

I'm studying Quantum Physics and I found this drawing on the net. It's the most known cat on the planet (sort off !), and it's Schoedinger's cat. But this is a very special cat: he's at the same time, alive and dead (both!)... Spooky! The stuff he's drawing is the wave function (what??!) which is describing the probability of him being alive or being dead. And according to the quantum theory, before we open the box, he's in a "superposition" state, and it's only when we open the box that the cat become a normal cat: alive OR dead (but not both!). Sound crazy? Yes, well it is. But the fact is, your computer, works also in the same way, as its tiny components behave like schroedinger's cat. Beautiful, isn't it?

Je viens de decouvrir les "doramas" ou les dramas japonais et je suis devenu un fan de ces mini serie japonaise. Tres profond la plupart du temps, elle ouvre une perspective interessante sur l'empire du soleil levant..

Open University: could do better...

I went to a tutorial last Tuesday hopping to understand better the distribution of molecular speed. Well, I'm still in the dark as how the boltzmann constant has been derived. I know, I'm only supposed to use the formula in the book, but I hate learning off by heard stuff without understanding them.
My tutor is nice, but didnt seem to be at ease with this subject. And more and more, I have the impression that going to tutorial is just a waste of time. The positive thing is that the tutor gave us a little summing up of the first chapter of the book "classical physics of matter". He told us that the exam question on this topic is going to be basic and that we shouldnt worry too much about understanding the derivation and more focussing on how to use the formula.
Well, I dont do this course only to have a degree in Physics, but also because I LOVE physics. So learning off by heart stuff that I dont really understand, is not my prefered option. The tutor suggested I buy one book devoted excusively to mechanics statistics. Yes, well... sure. Maybe another time.

The chief executive of a British no frills airline has branded the French "lazy frogs" for the second time in a week.
Philip Meeson, chief executive of Jet2.com, was angry that one of his planes was delayed flying back to Britain by protesting French students.
About 50 students staged a runway sit-down that stopped around 100 passengers boarding a Boeing 737 at Chambery airport in the French Alps.
Eventually the plane was able to take off for Leeds Bradford airport, where it arrived 90 minutes late.
Mr Meeson said he was annoyed French police had done nothing to stop the Chambery runway protest which also forced Jet2.com to divert a flight from Manchester to Grenoble.
He repeated his comments of last week when, on the back of a strike by French air traffic controllers, he urged "lazy frogs to get back to work".
"I am absolutely furious about the events in France over the last week. We are a low cost airline that has had passengers stranded through no fault of our own," he said.
Earlier, he wrote on his airline's website: "Whilst France is undeniably a beautiful country (with equally good food and beer I hasten to add) we are appalled and quite frankly tired of the air traffic controllers' old fashioned attitude to dealing with any issues they may have."
His comments were illustrated by a picture of a toy frog in front of an air traffic control tower, holding a sign reading: "I am lazy."
Mr Meeson concluded: "In short we urge the controllers to get back to work or get another job."
